I Thought I Knew You

This diptych explores the tension between personal identity and understanding others, particularly within family systems marked by control and neglect. The first panel reflects inward questions about self, while the second interrogates perceptions of a parent’s behavior and intentions. The work considers how trying to accommodate or appease others can obscure understanding of both self and those around us. By examining the interplay of perception, expectation, and relational dynamics, the work interrogates the process of discovering authentic identity and truly knowing the people closest to us.
