Pain Does Not Need To Be Punished

This painting reflects on self‑harm, isolation, and the quiet role animals play as witnesses and sources of comfort. Growing up in a volatile environment, I internalized blame and turned harm inward, while my pets remained present and nonjudgmental. Their unconditional presence offered a form of care that felt safer than human connection. The work considers how emotional neglect can distort self‑perception, making individuals believe they are the problem. Through this work, I examine companionship, misdirected guilt, and the contrast between human avoidance and animal empathy.
