Interbeing

The ribbon-like form of this steel sculpture represents an idea shared by my undergraduate professor, Dr. Cortney Chaffin, during a lecture about interconnections and what it means to “inter-be.” She described the universe and the world as being like the ocean, with our lives as single waves that rise up briefly and then sink back down.

I was deeply moved by this metaphor and wanted to create a piece that embodied that concept, capturing the rise and fall, the connection between the individual and the vast whole.
